State Farm Is a Good Company. But One Company Is Not Enough in Florida.
State Farm is the largest home insurer in the country. They have strong financials, they pay claims, and they are not leaving Florida. There are dozens of State Farm offices across Duval County.
None of that is the issue. The issue is that a State Farm agent can only sell you State Farm. If State Farm has the best rate for your home, great. But if they do not, your agent cannot show you a better option.
An independent agent can. That is the entire difference.
How Many Options Does Your Agent Actually Give You?
This is the question most people never think to ask. Here is the answer for home, auto, and business.
In short: an independent agent gives you access to dozens of companies for your home, auto, and business. A State Farm agent is limited to State Farm for all three.
When State Farm Might Be the Right Choice
State Farm can be competitive for newer homes with no claims history. If your home was built after 2010, has a recent roof, and you bundle auto and home together, their pricing can be solid.
But here is what most people do not realize: State Farm is not uniquely competitive on newer homes. Companies like American Integrity, Tower Hill, and Nationwide also write strong rates for newer Florida homes. The difference is you would never see those options through a State Farm agent.
And here is the part that surprises people: Nationwide, one of the largest insurers in the country, is available through independent agents. You do not lose access to the big names by working with an independent agent. You gain access to them plus dozens of other companies.
State Farm's real strength is financial stability. They are the largest insurer in the country. They pay claims and they are not leaving Florida. In a state where smaller companies have gone under during hurricane season, that stability is worth something.
What Happens When State Farm Cannot Write Your Jacksonville Home
This is where the real difference between independent and captive agents shows up.
If your home does not qualify with State Farm, they cannot write it with another company. Their only other option is Citizens. And Florida law requires them to run it through the Citizens Property Insurance clearinghouse before writing it with Citizens.
The clearinghouse sends your application to other companies participating in the Citizens system. You may get an offer from one of those companies.
That sounds fine on the surface. But here is what can happen: policies placed through the Citizens Clearinghouse often follow Citizens guidelines, and you lose the true choice of what company you want.
Depending on the situation, that can mean lower liability limits, fewer coverage add-ons, and less flexibility than you might get by going directly to that same company through an independent agent.
This is not a knock on State Farm. They are following the process Florida requires. But depending on your home, the process can limit what you end up with compared to what an independent agent can access directly.
When an Independent Agent Is the Clear Winner
Here is the kind of situation we see regularly in Jacksonville.
A homeowner in Mandarin has a home built in 2003 with a roof that is 14 years old. Their current company raised their rate by $900 at renewal. They called their agent and the agent said "that is just the market right now."
They called us. We ran their home through 12 companies. Here is what came back:
Their old agent never showed them those options because their old agent only had one company to offer. That is the difference an independent agent makes.
Whether your home is brand new or twenty years old, the math works the same way. More companies quoting your home means a better chance of finding the right coverage at the right price. That is true for a $250,000 starter home in Arlington and a $600,000 home in Ponte Vedra.
An independent agent goes directly to the companies that fit your situation. They know which ones are writing the most competitive rates right now, which ones have the best claims reputation, and which ones offer the coverage options you actually need.
We quote multiple A-rated Florida carriers across every price range, from starter homes to waterfront properties to well-maintained older homes where coastal wind options can make a real difference in both coverage and price.
They do not have to route your application through a clearinghouse. They go straight to the source, which means you get the full range of coverage options, not a stripped-down version.
This is especially important for flood insurance in Jacksonville, where private flood options through independent agents often outperform what is available through a captive agent's limited network.
The same applies to auto insurance. Splitting your home and auto between different companies can sometimes save more than bundling with one.

State Farm is a fine company. So are Allstate, Nationwide, and a dozen others. The issue is not which company your agent sells. The issue is whether your agent can show you all of them.
In Florida, where insurance rates are among the highest in the country and where companies change their pricing every year, seeing only one price means you are guessing. Seeing 10 or 20 prices means you know.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is State Farm more expensive than an independent agent in Jacksonville?
Not always. State Farm can be competitive for certain homes, especially newer construction. But without comparing other companies side by side, you have no way of knowing if State Farm's rate is actually the best available.
An independent agent runs that comparison for you.
Do I pay more to use an independent agent?
No. The premium is the same. Insurance companies pay the agent's commission from their operating budget. Your rate does not change based on whether you buy through an independent agent, a captive agent, or directly online.
Can an independent agent also sell State Farm?
No. State Farm does not allow independent agents to sell their products. However, many of the companies available through independent agents offer similar or better coverage at competitive prices.
What if I already have State Farm and want to compare?
You do not have to cancel anything to get a comparison. An independent agent can quote your home using your current declarations page and show you how other companies stack up. If State Farm is still the best option, a good agent will tell you that.
What if I like my State Farm agent?
That is completely fair. A good relationship with your agent matters. But liking your agent and getting the best rate are two different things.
You can always get a comparison quote from an independent agent without canceling anything. If State Farm is still the best option, a good independent agent will tell you that. You lose nothing by checking.
Can I keep my State Farm auto and move just my home to another company?
Yes. You are not required to keep all your policies with one company. An independent agent can help you figure out whether bundling everything saves more or whether splitting your home and auto between different companies is cheaper.
